Nolvadex, is an anticancer drug that is used to treat breast cancer. Its effectiveness when treating a cancer has spread to other parts of the body and the kind of breast cancer that thrives on estrogen has been proved. It is also common for doctors to prescribe Nolvadex for treatments that involve the reduction of the risks of invasive breast cancer after surgery and radiation therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ. It can also be used as a prevention method for women with a high risk of developing breast cancer. Even though it does not eliminate all risks, a five-year study involving 1,500 women from this category proved that it reduced the number of cases by 44%.

Pregnant women should not take Nolvadex during pregnancy as it could have some negative effects on the unborn child. Note that Nolvadex being an anti-estrogen drug, you shouldn’t use any form of hormonal contraception, such as birth control pills, and use a condom and/or diaphragm instead. If you were to fall pregnant during or within a period of 2 months before a Nolvadex-based treatment, contact your doctor immediately to find a solution. Also do not take Nolvadex while breastfeeding a baby. However, if Nolvadex is essential for your health, you may need to discontinue breastfeeding the duration of your treatment.

Unwanted reaction from Nolvadex are usually insignificant and rarely requires the treatment to be aborted. Such side effects include nausea, vomiting and hot flashes. If the reactions intensify contact your doctor to know if you should stop the treatment.

Even though Nolvadex greatly diminishes the risks of contracting breast cancer, it increases the odds of the patient developing endometrial cancer. So women undergoing a Nolvadex-based treatment should have regular gynecological examinations and immediately contact their treating doctors if they suffer from any endometrial cancer symptoms, even after the end of the treatment.
